Category: Showcase Winners

Image Contest Winner – November 2019

The winner of November’s image contest was Baby Photographer Hayley Cattell from Hayley Cattell Photography. Hayley’s website can be found here: www.hayleycattell.co.uk

Hayley shot this gorgeous image as part of a client session, and is no stranger to the image contest having come first in May and July of this year too. Hayley chose this image because she adored the neutral colour palette and pale colours and felt that it emphasised the focus of the image on the baby. She loved how snug and sweet little Louis looked all tucked up cuddling the little teddy.

Tell us about how you lit and set up the image, do you use natural or studio light?

“For this shot I use natural light from wide floor length windows. I use blinds over one third of the window so there’s not too much light streaming through as I like to have enough shadow to see the depth of baby’s face. I swaddled Louis with a stretch wrap, then neatly wrapped the knitted wrap on top. I finished the styling with a matching bonnet and that sweet little teddy.”

What does winning the showcase mean to you?

“I really can’t explain just how much it means to be voted in first place in the showcase by so many other incredible photographers! Not to mention the sheer number of gorgeous photos entered as well. Honestly, it means the world. Thank you very much to everyone who voted.”

What other elements of your ‘The Baby & Newborn Network’ membership do you enjoy most?

“Obviously the fantastic member content, but mainly the wonderful and ongoing support and help that’s always so readily available.”

How long have you been shooting professionally and where did your love of photography come from?

“I’ve been shooting professionally for almost 8 years, and working for myself for over 5 years now. I actually fell in love with, but mainly stumbled across, photography when I was around 16 years old. It was mainly by accident, I actually fell ill and was unable to start college when I was supposed to. With more spare time on my hands than anyone knows what to do with, I came across the old photo sharing website, Flickr, and just totally fell in love with it from there! That combined with always wanting to work with young children, it seems like this is where I was always meant to end up.”

Would you like to mention any suppliers whose products or props are used in the image?

“Of course! My very talented and lovely mum (www.petitepropsuk.etsy.com) knit the wraps, bonnet and gorgeous little teddy.”

Where do you work from, (ie home or studio) and where are you based?

“I work from my home studio in Barnsley, South Yorkshire.”

What are your best selling/most popular products?

“My most popular item to sell are digital images – but what I think makes mine special and my clients really love them is that I also provide a gorgeous little linen album with any USB of all images. I think it’s so important for clients to walk away with a beautifully printed, physical product! Everybody seems to purchase that, but my next best selling product would then probably be one of my stunning 24 x 24″ multiple aperture frames.”

What photography training have you undertaken and why?

“I’ve had 1:1 newborn posing and safety training, as well as in-person and online workshops. I don’t think you ever stop learning, and it’s so important when first starting out to get some proper training on how to safely pose those precious little babies.I also have an A-Level in photography.”

How far in advance do clients have to book and what is your booking process?

“I take bookings from my client’s 20 week scan. I can sometimes squeeze in babies who have already arrived depending on how busy I am, but I definitely recommend parents booking while still pregnant to guarantee availability!”

What is your favourite genre of photography?

“Newborns & Babies – 100%!”

How do you win your subjects over, that goes for any age from Newborn to adults?

“With newborns and babies, it’s always a lot of patience and perseverance. With adults, usually humour at my expense!”

We’d love you to share some customer reviews.

“I am so happy we chose Hayley to photograph our son, all her work is just beautiful.

From first meeting Hayley she was very welcoming and she handled our son with such care and patience. Hayley’s passion for photography definitely shows and is reflected in her stunning work.

I cannot thank Hayley enough for capturing the most precious moments of our sons first year and creating the most special memories which will be treasured for a lifetime.

We have recently had a new addition to our family and we did not hesitate to have Hayley again to photograph our baby boy.

I would highly recommend Hayley to anyone wanting beautiful and flawless photographs of their children.”

“Hayley was absolutely amazing with our baby girl as a newborn and at six months which can both be challenging times! Her attention to detail is outstanding and the photos are ever so beautiful and we will treasure them forever! We could not have hoped for a better newborn and baby photographer. Her patience and attentiveness to our baby ensured the most perfect results! Thank you so much for capturing some of our baby’s most precious moments ❤️

“Hayley did a new born session with some sibling and family photographs in August 2019. We selected Hayley after looking at her website. Compared to other photographers in the Sheffield/ Rotherham area, we liked the natural colours and baby poses used. Her studio is gorgeously presented and extremely comfortable. I don’t believe we would have captured the same quality or quantity of photographs had we selected a photographer that came to our home. I found Hayley to be extremely friendly, professional and kind, instantly putting our 3 year old at ease. In fact at the end of the day he didn’t want to leave her studio! We were really keen to capture some images of our two children together and Hayley was extremely patient with both our new born and 3 year old son. We felt that her time and patience yielded beautiful shots of our toddler’s personality. We haven’t yet seen the finished outcomes but I am sure we will treasure the photographs. When communicating with Hayley, she is extremely responsive and provided all the information we required. Our photograph session was an excellent experience and we would highly recommend Hayley.”

Image Contest Winner – October 2019

We say this every month but it’s true! Once again October showed us that we have the most talented members! However the winning image for October was taken by Sarah Bertram of Sweet Pea Photography, Sarah has entered the image competition a few times but has never placed, so her perseverance this month finally paid off.  Thank you Sarah for this very informative and insightful look into your business and thank you also to everyone else that entered this month!

Sarah’s website can be found here.

www.sweetpeaphotography.co.uk

Sarah shot this image as part of a client session and chose to enter it because she was happy with the pose, the light and felt the image as a whole was please. Sarah’s studio has no natural light at all so she uses elichrom d lite one with a 135 octo softbox. The headband in the image was from Dream Away Designs.

What does winning the showcase mean to you?

“I can’t believe it!! Ive entered quite a few times over the years and never won so I’m really pleased. I feel like my work has grown closer to where i want to be in the last 6 months so this feels like confirmation.”

What other elements of your ‘The Baby & Newborn Network’ membership do you enjoy most?

“The business training is invaluable. No other group I’m part of offers information on social media and marketing the way The Baby & Newborn Network does. My only wish is I had more time to use and learn from all the benefits and resources on offer. “

How long have you been shooting professionally and where did your love of photography come from?

“Photography for me started as a hobby probably like most of us. I had just had my second child and felt like i wanted to document my children better than i had been. SO i bought my first canon 350d I practiced on friends then i got some training with a local wedding photographer. She was very techy and taught me a lot about how the settings on a camera work and then showed me the basics in photoshop. That was 14 years ago. After a few years of photographing children on location and in their homes i did a few weddings. I still worked as a nanny and was doing photography at the weekends. I guess it was at this point i lost my love for it a little. I wasn’t earning enough money from it. We were having a tough time at home and I needed to sell my camera and lenses (I now had the Canon 5d which was new at the time) to pay the mortgage that month. So i left it all for a couple of years and then I had my third child. I had started to see all these beautiful images of newborn babies from America and I was again inspired. It felt like a natural place to go as it combined my years of experience with babies and children along with a desire to try and create these images. Its safe to say the first couple of years were slightly tragic. Its now been 8 years since i started Sweet Pea photography and its certainly a full time job. I love what I do! I feel very lucky to have found a business that works for me and my family and brings me so much satisfaction.”

Where do you work from, (ie home or studio) and where are you based?

“I have a studio in Caterham Surrey that I shared with another Photography business. However I now run both. Mine is very specialist and the other is very main stream high street work so they don’t really clash. Its hard running two different brands though!”

Tell us about your goals for your business

“Id like to see it grow over the next few years, Id like to be able to take on an assistant at some point to help with admin and maybe even editing.”

How do you push yourself, where do you draw your inspiration from?

“I think sometimes working for yourself and by yourself is hard. No one to lean on when the work is piling up but the fact that I have come so far and yet feel like i’m not quite there yet keeps me going. Im inspired by many photographers for different reasons. Some for there incredible business skills and some just for the images they produce. My first inspiration though, the one that hooked me was Mary Macomber Pebbles and polka dots photography. I don’t follow her so much now but she along with Kellie Wilson were my original inspirations. Quite different in style but loved equally.”

What are your best selling/most popular products?

“Probably Acrylics and deep framed canvases.”

What photography training have you undertaken and why?

“My first training was with Tracy willis on newborn posing. This was a great start for me and helped get me off the ground. I did some banpas light training with gary hill. I needed this to understand what I was doing with studio light. I then trained with Sharon Wallis Maggie from dinky feet photography and most recently with Emma Jayne. I love to try and so something every year although its not always possible but i think its important to keep learning.”

How far in advance do clients have to book and what is your booking process?

“Most clients book with me in their third trimester. A lot of clients are last minute bookings, if i have the space then I will always try and squeeze them in but pre booked mums always take priority. All I do is ask mums to let me know as soon as the baby is born and then I schedule them in for around 7 days later so They are always staggered.”

What is your favourite genre of photography?

“newborns, sitters and cake smash!”

How do you win your subjects over, that goes for any age from Newborn to adults?

“Im a very friendly and gentle natured person. Children seem to warm to quickly. Working with children was my career so nothing they do phases me and i think that comes across. Im very patient which of course also helps! Grownups i just try to make feel comfortable by chatting and as soon as you start being silly and interacting with their children they tend to relax anyway!”

We’d love you to share some customer reviews.

“The whole experience with Sarah from start to finish was an enjoyable one for us. I had been following Sarah’s page on Facebook for a while and couldn’t wait to book my shoot with her. When the time came Sarah was quick to respond to emails and explained all the next steps to me. We took our newborn daughter (6 days old) for her shoot and Sarah greeted us with a cup of tea (as new parents this was like magic in a cup!) She took Marnie from us and we relaxed for the rest of the shoot whilst Sarah took the most amazing photos of our daughter. Whenever Marnie fussed Sarah soothed her straightaway and by the end of the shoot we had given her the name ‘baby whisperer’! Ten days after our shoot the preview of our gallery arrived and we couldn’t believe how beautiful the photos were. We took advantage of one of the great packages on offer and bought the whole gallery! Two days later the memory stick arrived in the post in the most beautiful little bag. Sarah captured such precious memories for us when she took these photos and they will last a lifetime. We can’t thank her enough and will be recommending her to all our friends and family.”

Featured Photographers

We love nothing more than celebrating our members.  It’s the main reason we’ve introduced dedicated social media channels to showcase your images and services.  (Not using this feature of your membership? Get more traffic to your website and social media by looking out for the special posts in our members only group HERE)

Our monthly image contest is another way we can shout about how fantastic our members are.  We are always looking for ways we can improve everything we offer and we’ve been thinking about our monthly contest for a while now.

We love the fact our members choose the winners – we think that’s pretty awesome as you guys are at the chalkface, you’re better placed than anyone to decide our deserving winners.  We also love our sponsors, [C41s, Yellow Sprout and LSP] who make first second and third place even more exciting (is that even possible!?) with the fantastic prizes they sponsor the competition with.

But we got to thinking about all of the photographers who enter, and just narrowly miss out.  Or perhaps they have plucked up the courage to enter for the first time, and don’t get placed.  We also want to show appreciation to you guys.

And that’s when we came up with our Featured Photographers.

Every month, we’re going to choose, at random, from the monthly image contest entries, a further 10 images to feature across our social media.  We’ll always link back to your website or social media – giving you more traffic, more exposure and more eyes on your work.

The featured photographers will be chosen completely at random, being chosen is not a reflection of the quality of the images and there’ll be no reference to the image contest.  It’s just another way to make your network membership work hard for you.

To enter the image contest you need to make sure you have an active listing on Find The Best Photographer and then simply click HERE to submit up to three images. (If you need any help with setting up your listing or entering, voting, please visit the Tutorial section in the Member’s Hub HERE ) You will notice we’ve changed the terms of entry slightly to allow us to use the images across social media if you are chosen as one of our featured photographers.

So if you’ve ever wavered about entering, now you have an incentive!  Good luck!Read the rest

Did you shoot the image for the showcase or as part of a client session?

“This session was for myself really, I wanted to shoot maternity with a cultural influence.”

What stood out to you about the image, why did you choose it for your entry?

“I adored it in colour, but there was something strong, spiritual and powerful about the black and white image that took my own breath away.”

Tell us about how you lit and set up the image, do you use natural or studio light?

“I use studio light, elinchrom D-Lite 1 modified with an elinchrom 135cm Octa which is placed camera right.”

Would you like to mention any suppliers whose products or props are used in the image?

“I used Creativity Backgrounds in Seal Grey for the background although how it is lit and retouched gives it the appearance that it is black.”

What does winning the showcase mean to you?

“Winning this showcase means everything. It means that I am creating work that is loved by others as much as I do. It is hard to stand out when there are so many incredible photographers sharing their work so knowing that they love mine really does humble me.”

What other elements of your ‘The Baby & Newborn Network’ membership do you enjoy most?

“I love the community, the support, advice and tips to make our businesses better. I am just getting used to the new forum and website and its fantastic!”

How long have you been shooting professionally and where did your love of photography come from?

“I have been shooting professionally for 2.5 years now. Like many others, I fell in love with photography by photographing my own daughter when she was a baby. I got sucked into the photography world and I have been a lover (addict) of photography since.”

Where do you work from, (ie home or studio) and where are you based?

“I currently work from home, in Smethwick but I am potentially on the move to a studio!”

Tell us about your goals for your business

“Have a premises and continue to strive for advance bookings and repeat customers.”

How do you push yourself, where do you draw your inspiration from?

“I think to myself, would I rather regret a missed opportunity or go for it and see what happens? My strongest inspiration is Lola Melani, her work is what I aspire to. I also love Lindsay Adler’s work! There are a number of other photographers who incorporate strong, proud colours with their culture in their art which is amazing!”

What are your best selling/most popular products?

“I have just sold a 36×24 Fine Art Framed Print from Photech Frame and Print. It is incredible!”

What photography training have you undertaken and why?

“I have had a fair amount of training! I have trained in lighting with Gary Hill a few times which was a turning point for me. I have also done newborn training with a few other talented and well known photographers but the maternity training I had back in March 2018 really did confirm for me that maternity is my favourite.”

How far in advance do clients have to book and what is your booking process?

“I recommend clients book as early as possible, though I occasionally have last minute availability. Usually, clients enquire via my website and we discuss over the phone their pregnancy and expectations as well as session details, packages and wall art.”

What is your favourite genre of photography?

“Definitely has to be Maternity!”

How do you win your subjects over, that goes for any age from Newborn to adults?

“I think they love the images that they see, I also try to learn more about the client, build up a relationship with them. Being a midwife, I am proud of that and so I think it helps clients to feel more comfortable and relaxed. They are always impressed by my knowledge and support that I give them, which is like value isn’t it?”

We’d love you to share some customer reviews.

“The best maternity and newborn photographer with such an amazing talent. Her creativity and work never ceases to amaze everyone and she never disappoints! – A, White. What a lovely experience we had with Tianna. I can’t wait for her to photograph my children as they grow. We love our prints and would entirely recommend her services. On a personal note to you Tianna….. How special it must be to capture these little souls as they join us on Earth, your talent and patience is amazing! Parents like us will remember you throughout their lives, esp when we show our kids these photos in 20 odd years time. My point is the work you do, isn’t just about taking pics. It’s much more magical than that xxxx. – S, Pall-Singh. Tianna is an amazing photographer and I totally love her work. We are so happy with the photos and they have given us memories to cherish forever. She made us feel so welcome and was so patient with us throughout the shoot. She knew exactly how she wanted to capture all my Sons images and worked so hard to get the best poses. I highly recommend her work to anyone and I am so grateful to her x” – K, Ajimal.

What else can you tell us about you and your business?

“I am excited to announce that I was awarded the RISE International Rising Photographer of The Year 2019 with my maternity image! Which is such an exciting achievement! To have International recognition gives me so much joy and to be judged by incredible artists was a fantastic experience. I am very passionate about culture and so when clients opt to include elements of their culture in their sessions, I feel so honoured to be a part of cultural legacy.

I encourage clients to rediscover themselves, within my maternity photography. It is such a huge, monumental time in a woman’s life with so much change to come. It is about creating memories but being present in photographs, showing their baby how much they loved them before they met. That is powerful. You are never pregnant twice with the same baby and so that time demands to be captured forever. I am led by my clients, I encourage them to tell me what they like and we work together to create their portraits. As a registered nurse and midwife, you can rest assured they are in safe, competent hands at all times. My focus is on my clients, empowerment and encouragement are my main priorities for maternity clients. Many often return for newborn photography, which is like adding chapters to the story of their family. I am overjoyed to capture their history in the making, they’ll be surprised how quickly it goes by.”

We’ve recently had a newborn shoot that we took our 2 year old along to and despite her usually being shy with strangers Hayley soon had her leaping around roaring like a lion! We recommend Hayley to all our friends. Definitely want to book a family outdoor shoot in future!”

BANPAS Showcase Winner – June 2019

The winner of June’s showcase is the very talented Jemma from Jemma Slater Photography, you can view more of her work here: www.jemmaslaterphotography.com

Below is our interview with Jemma, we were blown away to discover that Jemma has only been shooting professionally since January 2019!

Did you shoot the image for the showcase or as part of a client session?

“Yes, it was a sitter session where baby’s Mum gave me the freedom to do all the styling and I LOVED it :)”

What stood out to you about the image, why did you choose it for your entry?

“Wearing my ‘Mum’ hat I love his little face and how it captures innocence and wonderment at that age but as a photographer, I love the light in this image which is something I’ve been working hard on recently.”

Tell us about how you lit and set up the image?

“I use studio light, an Elinchrom D-lite with a 135 Octabox.”

What does winning the showcase mean to you?

“Everything! Photography is my happy place. Thank you to everyone that noticed my image!”

What other elements of your BANPAS membership do you enjoy most?

“I’m new in the business and it’s very overwhelming when you first start out. I found myself wasting so much time researching good articles to read so I could educate myself and then Banpas came into my life and saved the day. All the information is clear and concise and saves me so much time!”

How long have you been shooting professionally?

“I have been shooting professionally since January 2019 which is a huge deal because I suffered from anxiety and depression for years and never thought I’d have the confidence.

To help me focus on anything other than my own thoughts, I took up landscape and astrophotography but then fell pregnant with my third child which sadly put an end to chasing the stars in the middle of the night. When my daughter, Florence, was born I started taking pictures of her, found my passion and the rest is history…”

Where do you work from?

“I have a beautiful studio in a little village called Brockhampton in the Herefordshire countryside.”

Tell us about your goals for your business?

“I am working really hard just to put my name out there at the moment. I absolutely adore my job and I really hope my clients can feel that.”

How do you push yourself, where do you draw your inspiration from?

“I am inspired by light and how creative you can be with it and look back at artists like Rembrandt and Vermeer and how they crafted their art using light and composition. If I’m having a creative block it’s their paintings I turn to.”

What are your best selling/most popular products?

“I’m really lucky to be able to sell The Original Photoblocks, they suit my style of photography perfectly and my clients just love them.”

What photography training have you undertaken and why?

“With the technical parts of photography I’m completely self-taught but I’ve had several extensive newborn 1:1 mentoring sessions because, being a mother myself, safety is number one. I want my clients to feel confident that when they handed their baby over it was safe and that I knew what I was doing. I also recognise that newborn photography is an art and it’s much harder than it looks!”

How far in advance do clients have to book and what is your booking process?

“I’m still establishing myself and can only work part-time but I already have too much work. I find it hard to say no.
It’s easy to book, just send me an email, facebook message or give me a call and I’ll be in touch.
I prefer the personal approach and find this a better way to get to know my clients a bit before they come in for their session.”

What is your favourite genre of photography?

“Newborn.”

How do you win your subjects over, that goes for any age from Newborn to adults?

“I’ve learnt just to be myself right from the start. I’m a mum so kids are easy and funnily enough I’m camera shy so I like to make my clients feel as relaxed as possible. I’m also a perfectionist which, for the moment anyway, my clients really appreciate.”

We’d love you to share some customer reviews.

  • “Jemma is second to none – Professional, Polite, Patient & takes so much pride in her work & what she does. Everything is to such a high standard! Can’t recommend enough – Oliver”
  • “Jemma is an amazing photographer. Absolutely love our little girls’ newborn photos and with her brother and sisters. Jemma handled our little girl with love, care and patience. Would highly recommend. Claire xxx”

She was so patient with my little boy and got some amazing shots! Will be coming back with all my future children and I would highly recommend! Can’t thank Jemma enough! – Chloe”

What else can you tell us about you and your business?

“I specialise in newborn, maternity and baby photography and view it a privilege to capture such special times in a persons life.”

In the below interview Tianna explains what inspires her on a daily basis and how she achieved the winning newborn image, and of course what she gains from BANPAS membership

Did you shoot the image for the showcase or as part of a client session?

“This newborn image was shot as a model call – I wanted to refine my posing and try some new props.”

What stood out to you about the image, why did you choose it for your entry?

“I personally love the clean, contemporary feel. It is nice and impactful, in my opinion.”

Tell us about how you lit and set up the image?

“I set up using a flat posing bed with a number of layers including a soiling mat to make it soft and to protect the layers. my light was positioned to my right, I always shoot this way. It was on the lowest setting – though I do meter my light to ensure I am on the right track. I also made sure to use my grey card, to help with colour casts and retouching.  ”

Would you like to mention any suppliers whose products or props are used in the image?

“Yes, I used the Blessence Props – Zara background in cream.”

What does winning the showcase mean to you?

“It is such an incredible feeling, to be voted by friends and colleagues shows a huge amount of support and that is humbling. It is also great to show to my clients.”

What other elements of your BANPAS membership do you enjoy most?

“I enjoy the community of photographers, asking questions and sharing tips and advice.”

How long have you been shooting professionally?

“I have been shooting professionally since April 2017!”

Where do you work from?

“I work from my home – my living room is my shooting space. It may be fairly small but I am grateful to have learned to work in it.”

Tell us about your goals for your business.

“I would love to eventually have a space designed just for the sole purpose of my photography, be it a commercial property or garden studio. I am working on really making myself more known for what I do and love so that I can scale my business and become full time.”

How do you push yourself, where do you draw your inspiration from?

“I love to learn new things and so I often watch tutorials and youtube videos looking for inspiration. I regularly ask for feedback and seek out knowledge from others. Most importantly, it is good to take a break, to see things with fresh eyes and feel the love for photography again.”
